THE GOON MAT AND LORD BENARDO haben sich in um 2009 herum in Liege Belgien Formiert als Stinky Lou (Bass) die Band verlassen hatte, und seitdem haben die 2 Junge 3 Existenzielle probleme
1. - Sie Trinken viel Schaps und Bier a der Bar von links nach rechts und wider zurück
2. - sie lieben Frauen und die Frauen lieben sie, hört sich schön an, aber kann zu einem Riesen problem werden
3. - sie sind die wohl heisseste Boogie Blues Band auf dem Europäischen Kontinent dieser tage und bringen jede party in Rage, für dieses Album kolaborierten sie zusammen mit Jim Diamons (the Dirtbombs, the White Stripes, the Devils) der sie Produzierte und aufnahme ihr hört an der Gitarre, Schlagzeug,Gesang: THE GOON MAT er fliegt wie auf einem Trip über die köpfe zum grabe von Junior Kimbrough und an der Harmonika der unglaubliche LORD BERNARDO... der total den verstand verloren hatt spielt seine Harmonika so intense besessen das man es kaum glauben kann das ist der neue Groove für all euch Blues Punk Anhänger, kommet herein in unsere Säuffer Bar und Tanzt zum Heissen Swamp Blues Trash Beat von The Goon Mat and Lord Benardo mit der Filigran Technik von jungen ELMORE JAMES und die Rauheit von IGGY AND HIS STOOGES, sie Fahren ein wie ein Trip mit: Junior Kimbrough und fahren auf der schnell Strasse mit keinem anderen als R.L. MERTONOME (USA)
For a couple of relatively young hipsters, these Belgian boys sure dig deep into the blues. There’s an instant upbeat party atmosphere with a snarl on “Because of You” where the harp propels the mood while the stripped down percussion looks after positive forward motion. “Get Down with You” has even more torque with a real hook laden combo of crunchy guitar with aforementioned harmonica all while the middle eight leaves you gagging for the mind blowing song ending. The boys become a little inward looking on “Conception of the Blues” which gets trance like. “Tonight Is the Night” coasts not so gently in and out of various twists and turns. “Take off Your Clothes” is almost threatening with lots of tense slow parts and a more distant voice. “Tried” has a go at the snake juice and delivers the perfect theme song for when a remake of Apocalypse Now is remade. “Dance With Me” goes back to the bouncy and riff laden raunchy blues which continues on “Lille Girl.” The riff of “Babe” is even more hypnotically insistent, but the vocal interjections sadly leave me cold. The lads then deliver a near religious experience on “Show Me The Way” which puts little smirk on your face by the time they solo their way out if the situation. They finish off on the slow soulful and minimalistic “Voodoo Got Me. Granted there are certain limitations on variation with just one guitar, one voice, one harp and a little percussion but these guys make the best possible delicacy with it. If anything, they are doing what ZZ Top should have tried after Tres Hombres. [Gecko]
BLUES MATTERS (UK)
It felt like an incendiary device had exploded in a confined space when playing this CD the first time, this Belgium duo have certainly grasped the decibels aspect of their thrash blues boogie music but if you go just under the surface there is some fine Blues music being played by original musicians who have created a unique but true form of the Blues, a clear influence is John Lee Hooker. The two musicians names are as shown in the band title, with Goon Mat playing Guitar, drums and taking the lead vocal, while Lord Benardo plays Harp and provides back up vocals, all the songs are self written with the majority played frantically but when they do take a breather the results are good, I particularly enjoyed Tried which has an echo effect on the vocals creating a mystical menacing atmosphere aided by some tremendous mournful harmonica. This album demonstrates how two musicians can create a cacophony of sound with just three instruments, the boogie beat is consistent throughout and on the track Lille Girl they introduce a Status Quo style intro, the CD insert has the lyrics for each song which is helpful albeit on the majority of tracks there aren’t too many of them but it did help highlight that the track Conception Of The Blues is auto biographical as the two musicians are named and they describe their music as “played with balls and attitude”, ideal words, in conclusion I would also add that this is a great Blues album played by musicians who understand their music genre and put their heart and soul into their performances.

Das belgische Duo ist wohl die heisseste Boogie Blues Band Europas. Goon Mat, trommelt, spielt Gitarre und singt und Lord Benardo bläst die Harmonika wie ein Besessener. Dieser Blues tönt rauh, punkig und trashig aber immer herrlicher Boogie und Blues. Im Gegensatz zum Punk können die beiden ihre Instrumente auf hohem Niveau spielen. Es gibt eigentlich nicht viel dazu zu schreiben, sondern Musik ab und tanzen, was man bei diesen Klängen sowieso unweigerlich muss. (Fredi Hallauer)

“ Do you want to boogie!?... “ Nadat ergens rond 2009 Stinky Lou de bassist van de Waalse band Stinky Lou and the Goon Mat with Lord Bernardo de band verliet, om zijn eigen bar (Lou’s Bar) in Luik te kunnen openen, bleven Mathias Dalle aka The Goon Mat (de gekke Mat) en Fabian Bennardo aka Lord Benardo “alleen” over. Ze vervolgden hun weg als duo en vonden deeltijds ook een opvang bij hun Vlaamse collega’s van de Boogie Beasts. Het was de ideale symbiose tussen Vlaams en Waals talent: de uit Limburg afkomstige Jan Jaspers en Gert Servaes (gitarist/zanger en drummer van ex-Voodoo Boogie) & de uit de Vurige Stede Luik The Goon Mat en Lord Benardo (gitarist/zanger en harmonicaspeler bij ex-Stinky Lou). Resultaat: de Boogie Beasts, of te wel moddervette in gruis en slijk gedrenkte Belgische garagepunk blues boogie.
The Goon Mat & Lord Benardo brengen nu bij het legendarische Voodoo Rhythm Records als duo hun debuut album ‘Take Of Your Clothes’ uit. Het is een album met elf originals en met als producer Jim Diamond (The White Stripes, Sonics, The Dirtbombs, The Devils). Het is een album met “ authentic, organic, raw, wild & sexy garage blues... “
Zelf noemen ze hun muziek “”trash boogie” en live is de openingsvraag altijd “do you want to boogie?”. Waarom? Omdat het tijd is voor een uur “testosterone-driven, hard-hitting and dancin’ primal BOOGIE!...”.
”Because Of You” opent ‘Take Of Your Clothes’. Het is al direct duidelijk dat hier niet het inhoudelijke van de teksten primeert, maar wel de eindeloze groove, die nummer naar nummer uit de boxen rolt. Wat hun blues voorstelt, hoor je in detail in “Conception Of the Blues” en, als ze de titel song doen, tellen opnieuw de primaire lusten. “Tried” is even een intermezzo en ”Dance With Me”, ”Little Girl” en/of ”Babe” de volgende explosieve cocktail waarop gedanst, verleid en gescoord kan worden. Met ”Show Me the Way” is er tijd voor zelfreflectie en als de afsluiter ”Voodoo Got Me” inzet, lijkt het of het donkere einde in zicht is.
The Goon Mat & Lord Benardo zijn ongetwijfeld het meest explosieve roots boogie blues duo van Europa. Is er behoefte aan een eindeloze hypnotiserende groove, waarbij de adrenaline tijdens het dansen drijft op de sound van enkel een gitaar stijl Elmore James én een schreeuwend harmonica, dan is er maar één antwoord: The Goon Mat & Lord Benardo... Para muchos, musicalmente hablando el blues fue el origen de todo y a casi un siglo de las primeras grabaciones que existen, el género continúa vigente y representado ya no sólo en afroamericanos esclavos del sur de Estados Unidos sino en personas de cualquier nacionalidad, etnia y estrato social. Para reafirmar lo anterior sólo hay que observar a los integrantes del dueto The Goon Mat And Lord Benardo, el cual nació hace hace poco menos de una década en las pulcras calles de la ciudad de Lieja y quienes guardan una profunda afición por el género y la combinan por su otro amor que es el punk chatarra y maloliente. De esta manera, el conjunto originalmente era un trío que contaba con la formación tradicional de un grupo de rock, pero al poco tiempo de formado, el bajista abandonó a la banda, lo cual no significó grandes problemas para The Goon Mat aka Mathias Dalle (one-man-band que ejecuta la guitarra y batería) y Lord Benardo aka Fabian Bennardo (armónica y voz), quienes tomaron la decisión de continuar con el proyecto.
La primera muestra de su trabajo fue un 7" lanzado en el 2014 por el sello suizo Voodoo Rhythm Records y el cual les permitió presentarse por toda Europa y ganarse el respeto del público gracias a un sonido que amalgama la emotividad del blues con la fiereza del punk. Pero ahora, el dueto belga tiene listo su primer LP que de nueva cuenta será editado por la disquera fundada por el Reverend Beat-Man y el cual incluye 11 personales temas en los que hablan de cuestiones tan simples y banales como las decepciones amorosas y su amor por la cerveza, pero el secreto radica en la forma tan honestamente primitiva de ejecutar sus instrumentos hasta hacerlos llorar. Mientras que The Goon Mat, también guitarrista del grupo de rock Boogie Beasts, permanece en todo momento sentado para hacerse cargo de su guitarra y una destartalada batería de una forma solemne y estoica, Lord Benardo es todo lo contrario por los constantes movimientos que realiza sobre la tarima hasta el grado de revolcarse sobre el piso para exorcizar a la armónica que lo acompaña. Acerca del material, se muestra como una montaña rusa de emociones porque mientras la abridora "Because of You" muestra una cara más cercana al punk por el frenético ritmo que presenta, en "Tonight is the Night" se adentran más al blues sereno e introspectivo. Grabado y producido por el experimentado Jim Diamond (The Dirtbombs, The White Stripes y The Devils), el álbum es ideal para todo fanático de agrupaciones contemporáneas como Left Lane Cruiser, Mark "Porkchop" Holder y Daddy Long Legs, es decir, para quien sabe disfrutar sanamente de su tristeza sin caer en la cursilería ni el sentimentalismo extremo

Toch ook al 10, 15 jaar bezig, deze The Goon Mat & Lord Benardo uit Luik (B), eerst als Stinky Lou & the Goon Mat Featuring Lord Benardo maar contrabassist Stinky Lou zijn ze ergens onderweg verloren en het trio werd een duo. Niet dat dat op hun debuut als duo veel verschil maakt: met Mathias Dalle op zang, gitaar én tegelijkertijd op drums en Fabian Bennardo op voodoo mondharmonica weet u wat u te wachten staat: blues trash van de eerste categorie. De keywords zijn dan ook vervorming, distortie, feedback en herhaling. De hypnotiserende muziek klinkt door het geluidslandschap dat wordt opgeroepen soms als bluesrock en soms zelfs als hardrock maar lijkt 12 nummers lang uit de ketel van een toverkol te komen, terwijl ze zich op Tried dan weer van hun gevoeligste kant laten horen. GONZO CIRCUS (NL)
Tot 2009 waren de Luikenaars met zijn drieën. Stinky Lou besloot echter een café te openen, en liet The Goon Mat en Lord Benardo ietwat verweesd achter. Niet voor lang natuurlijk. Een paar flessen whiskey later en eens ferm op de harmonica blazen, en ze besloten om met zijn tweetjes de boogieblues gewoon verder te zetten. The Goon Mat (Matthias Dalle) en Lord Benardo (Fabian Bennardo) kropen de studio in met grootvader Jim Diamond (The White Stripes, The Dirtbombs, The Sonics) die hen meteen een optimaal scheurend en schurend geluid weet mee te geven. De harmonica krijgt veelal een hoofdrol, naast het naar Elmore James lonkend gitaarspel van The Goon Mat. De rudimentaire drums krijgen er op een traditionele onemanbandmanier van langs, al zijn ze met zijn tweeën. ‘Conception Of The Blues’ straalt de ruige blues van Jon Spencer Blues Explosion uit, terwijl een nummer als ‘Tried’ een eerder sloom en meeslepend duo laat horen. Het duo ragt namelijk niet de hele tijd door, maar bestrijkt het hele spectrum van de boogieblues, waarin al eens mag worden getreurd of opgelucht gefeest. En daar hoort uiteraard ook een religieus geïnspireerde song bij. Dat is ‘Show Me The Way’, met telkens weer “Lord” ervoor natuurlijk. The Goon Mat And Lord Benardo maken er een lekkere meestamper van, die zowaar hun geloofwaardigheid nog een stukje opkrikt. Eerder verwezen we al naar Jon Spencer. Voeg daar gerust een voorliefde voor Junior Kimbrough en R.L.Burnside aan toe, die de rauwe blues een tijd terug weer helemaal op de kaart hebben gezet.
