From the back alleys in Berne, Switzerland, chiseled into the foggy cold mountains Maryanne Shewolf and her pack sing their very own trippy psychedelic Desert Gospel Delta Space Blues.
Please welcome Honshu Wolves, today’s Delta Blues Desert Gospel Space Punk Sensation from Berne, Switzerland. Lead by Maryanne Shewolf, she and her small wolf pack Fabu and Mige are creating and functioning out of Zaffaraya, an alternative trailer park in the middle of Switzerland’s capital Berne, which definitely makes them outsiders in their own country. It’s a living and creating on the edge that could anytime be stopped by the police so you have to live every day as it comes. Unpredictable and free - just as the Honshu Wolves’ music. Maryanne Shewolf became a mother in a very early stage of her life, which left no space for drug escapades. So she built her spaced out world upon her music. „I immerse myself and put myself on a trip and forget everything around me. And when it hits me right, I know that it will affect others too,“ she says. She creates her music inspired by live shows of Spiritualized, Make Up, Alan Vega, Royal Trux or her longtime partner's band Roy & the Devil’s Motorcycle. She also gets her inspiration from PJ Harvey, Solki, Nina Simone or Jessie Mae Hemphill whom she admires all because they sing the blues and tell stories from the point of view of independent strong and yet fragile women.
The Honshu Wolves released their first recordings on their 10” ‚Shine On Me’ in 2010 on Mama Rosin’s own record label Moi J’Connais followed by the 12“ LP ‚Silver Ashes Line The Lane’ which was released on Sacred Hood Records in 2014. Both are Swiss labels. This album ‚Cosmic Creature Capture‘ on Voodoo Rhythm Records they recorded at Nomad Studio in Turin with Massimiliano "Mano“ Moccia (Movie Star Junkies, WOW, Love Trap, Lame). It was mastered by Oli Bösch (Stiller Haas, Hank Shizzoe, Becky Lee & Drunkfoot, Bonaparte) in Berne.

Aus dem Zaffaraya, einer alternativen Wagenburg heraus agierend, inmitten der Hauptstadt Bern, kreiert und musiziert das Trio seit 2009 und somit sind sie schon wegen diesem Background definitiv Propheten und Außenseiter in ihrem eigenen Land. Diese auf der Schneide stehende Behausung kann von heute auf morgen abrupt von der Polizei geräumt werden und treibt die Bewohner dazu an, jeden Tag so zu leben und nehmen wie er kommt und so unberechenbar und frei ist auch die Musik der Honshu Wolves.
Maryanne Shewolf wurde sehr jung Mutter und um 100% als Eltern „einigermassen“ zu funktionieren, hatten Drogeneskapaden keinen Platz. Somit baute sie sich mit der Musik ihr eigenes Universum auf, in einem Freiraum fernab von Schwerkraft, in einem fiktiven Land wo Zeit und Raum keine Rolle zu spielen scheinen. „Ich tauche dort voll ein und auf diesem Trip vergesse ich alles um mich herum. Und wenn es mir richtig einfährt, weiss ich, dass es auch andere berühren wird“ (maryanne Shewolf) inspiriert von besuchten Live-Konzerten wie Spiritualized, Make Up, Alan Vega, Royal Trux, oder von der Band ihres langjährigen Lebensgefährten Roy & the Devil's Motorcycle. Mit diesem Know-how kreiert sie ihre Musik, inspiriert von PJ Harvey, Solki, Nina Simone oder Jessie Mae Hemphill, die sie alle bewundert, da sie den Blues singen und Geschichten erzählen aus der Sicht eigenständiger, starken und dennoch fragilen Frauen.

Six years since their debut LP arrived, Honshu Wolves return and refine their sound for their second album, Cosmic Creature Capture, out on March 5th.

Honshu Wolves formed in 2007 and hail from a fringe village within Bern called Zaffaraya, a utopian trailer park founded in the 1980s during the youth riots occurring around Switzerland. The small village holds cultural significance to the Swiss capital with its alternative living option and violent early history of forced evacuations and relocations by Bern's city council.
Embracing the notion of being outsiders within their city, Honshu Wolves applies the same outsider approach to the songwriting on Cosmic Creature Capture. The album's minimal production gives a grainy dirt floor aesthetic to the eight tracks as the songwriting shifts from garage blues, punk, and droning space rock. Honshu Wolves first saw releases on Moi J'Connais Records (a label run by Mama Rosin) and Sacred Hood Records, Cosmic Creature Capture is their Voodoo Rhythm Records debut. When asked about the time gap between this release and 2014's Silver Ashes Line The Lane, Maryanne Shewolf is blunt and honest in her response.
"New guitarist included after the last LP and Bernese slowness. Being a mother of three kids also plays a part in the time gap and being. We also don't force the songwriting process." - Maryanne Shewolf.
The three traveled south from Bern to Turin, Italy, to record Cosmic Creature Capture with Massimiliano Moccia (Movie Star Junkies, Love Trap, LAME) and relayed the mix to Oli Bösch (Becky Lee Drunkfoot, Stiller Haas, Bonaparte) for mastering back in Bern.

In the years Honshu Wolves have roamed Europe, they have shared the stage with Roy & The Devil's Motorcycle, Ghost Wolves, Mama Rosin, Reverend Beat-Man, The Anteloids, and more. Their tours have taken them into the European festival circuit with performances at Apolide (IT) and Blues Rules (CH).

Eine heruntergekommene Bar. Staubig und dreckig, die Figuren am Tresen nicht im Geringsten einladend oder freundlich wirkend. Draussen brennt die Sonne. Staub und Schweiss liegen in der Luft. Sämtliche Strassen an der Kreuzung führen ins Nirgendwo, einziger Zufluchtsort ist der Saloon mit all seinen bizarren Gestalten und dieser gefährlichen Anziehungskraft, die einem nicht mehr loslässt. Furcht ist hier fehl am Platz, „Won’t Let Fear In“. Etwas Anziehendes hat dieser Ort unbestreitbar, sexy und verboten, genau wie die Musik, die aus den klapprigen Fenstern dröhnt. Knisternde Gitarren, ein rollender Beat, eine betörende Stimme, aus deren Bann es kein Entrinnen gibt. „Something’s In The Air“, also nicht weiter nachdenken, sondern rein ins Abenteuer, koste es, was es wolle. Drinnen ist eine winzige, schummrige Bühne. Darauf eine dreiköpfige Band, an deren Front eine Wölfin ihrer Gitarre und Stimmbändern betörende, verbotene Klänge entlockt. Der Begriff „Goddess“ erscheint vor dem geistigen Auge. Alles ist hier möglich, sämtliche Ahnung von Konventionen und vorgefertigten Bildern werden zerstört, nur der innere Drang nach Neuem, nach Unbekannten treibt weiter an. „Come Closer“ haucht die Wölfin. Es besteht keine andere Wahl. Angetrieben von niederen Instinkten kommt man nicht umhin, tiefer und tiefer in den Bann gesogen zu werden. Die Melodien sind minimalistisch und doch von monumentalem Effekt. Ruhe und Atmosphäre dominieren. Zeit und Raum spielen keine Rolle und für diesen Trip sind keine Rauschmittel und Zaubertränke nötig. Von der Bühne aus ertönt die Aufforderung „Tell Me“, doch was die Wölfin hören will, bleibt für immer ein Rätsel. Was danach passiert, bleibt ungewiss. Die Musik verschlingt sämtliche Vorstellungen davon, was noch real ist und was schon lange nicht mehr. Am nächsten Morgen ein raues Erwachen. „Last Night“ lässt keine Erinnerungen zu. Was ist geschehen? Hat uns die eigene Vorstellungskraft mal wieder einen Streich gespielt? Fragen über Fragen, auf die keine Antworten bestehen. Was bleibt, ist dieses Gefühl, dass man für kurze Zeit Teil von etwas ganz Grossem war. Teil von etwas Kosmischem, etwas Unbeschreiblichem. Nur eines ist klar: man will mehr davon und zurück in dieses Nirwana, am besten nie mehr weg von da. Willst du sowas auch einmal erleben? Dann wird empfohlen, das neue Album „Cosmic Creature Capture“ der Honshu Wolves aus Bern aufzulegen, die Augen zu schliessen und die Welt zu vergessen. So nämlich wird das Werk dieser, aus der alternativen Wagenburg Zaffaraya agierenden Künstler*innen am besten genossen. Der staubige Blues, die verführerische Stimme und die unvergleichliche Atmosphäre tun ihr Übriges dazu, um dieses Stück Musik zu etwas ganz Besonderem zu machen.
LOUDER THAN WAR (UK)Switzerland’s Honshu Wolves return with their second album, a trippy psych garage record that takes you on a journey. Hailing from Bern, Switzerland, Honshu Wolves, led by the aptly monikered singer/guitarist Maryanne Shewolf, deal in trippy and hypnotic garage, rooted in the blues but laced with acid space rock. The fuzz swells, guitars swim and drift, rhythms, sparse and coercing, tease the songs out as the vocals glide over the top. On tracks like Won’t Let Fear In, the result is one of The Kills lost somewhere in the snow-capped mountains in search of the Japanese folkloric protector of travellers from which the trio take their name. “Counting the beat on my heartache / Trying to keep it slow.” It’s exactly in the easy, unhurried style where the band are able to make their mark, giving Shewolf the space to let her voice breath and guitar wail out from the sultry background. The style is not what we’ve come to expect from the Voodoo Rhythm label, more associated with the rollicking and kicking garage-blues, but is certainly a great new string to their bow, one which the band pull slowly back to release their arrow into a gliding flight. There are definite shades of PJ Harvey on lead single Goddess, stripped back and almost devoid of music until the beat and twanging guitar rise slowly up. The unease created paints the character as the outsider, slowly revealing herself from the raw yet beautiful forests. By the time the song takes hold you realise that you have been entrapped and enthralled, under its spell with all willpower gone. White Dress is drenched in reverberating fuzz, winding and flowing as the protagonist of the song itself, while the following Tell Me steps back to a less polished Warpaint vibe. Throughout much of the record, there is an underlying desert country feel to many on the songs, one which they push more to the fore on AHA, whittled back to a simple acoustic guitar and slightly more uptempo. Marina, however, is the song where they bring all these elements together and really shine on what just may be the album’s real stand out track. Cosmic Creature Capture is just as its title suggests – a mystical garage album, not built for kicking up a barroom sweat, but rather for seeing you safely pass through the cold woodland night while dangers lurk, kept only at bay by the spell that Honshu Wolves cast.

Over the grassy knoll, down the weed tangled pathway, and to the right of the small babbling brook lays a large one-hundred-year-old oak tree. It has widely been known that the exposed massive root system has been used by generations of wolves for years thus giving many wolf pups their first home prior to venturing out in the unknown darkness.
However, what is more, exciting about this particular den is it's rumored that this particular wolf family is a direct descendant of the Honshu Wolves which have long been extinct in their native Japan since 1905 due to a contagious disease. In early twilight, the distinctive calling can be heard if one’s ears are pinned to the wind. Sightings are rare or based on overzealous accounts.
The Honshu Wolf is confident and trusting of its own instinct and is often one step ahead of any predator. It trusts its heart and mind and only feeds on what is needed for the family.
Highly elusive but it plays an important role in the re-population of the dwindling wolf population. Maryanne Shewolf dwells in the shadows of Zaffaraya in Bern, Switzerland away from the confines of everyday civilization, thus being able to ply her trade and create dreamlike psychedelic meanderings that border on White Rabbits and the poetic invocations of The Lizard King. Pulsing purple lights harboring "We Will Fall" and Spaceman 3 into drones of undulation through repetitious cycles of monotony and creation. Fabu and Mige are the passionate peduncles, pious pontiffs that allow Maryanne to journey through the passe-partout -- snarling, howling, baying, guiding, and forming. Catch the surf and ride the peak of the seventh wave. Peel back the layers of the glass onion to find what lies deep in The Honshu Wolves psyche and be rewarded by chimerical scripture with no predefined notions of grandeur. Escape and be free and the soothsayer will chaperone to the Blood Moon where you will bask in the soft red hues falling into submission and succumbing to the pulsing constant rhythm in your mind.
