THE PUSSYWARMERS, eine vier bis fünf Mann-Kombi fürs Ohr und fürs Auge, jaaa, meine Damen! aus der Sonnenstube der Schweiz, dem Tessin, wo sich die Touristen der ganzen Welt die Türklinke in die Hand drücken. Und hier scheint etwas faul zu sein, zu motten und zu kochen... eine skurrile Mischung aus einer Totengräberstimmung einer Kreuzfahrt mit der Titanic im Jahre 1912 und einem Teufelsritual. Gemixt mit einem debilen Kindergartenbesuch ART BRUT. So etwa könnte man sie beschreiben. Und à la Voodoo Rhythm, mit einer Instrumentalisierung die fernab von herkömmlichem, radio-tauglichem Schema arbeitet, mixen die PUSSYWARMERS in ihrem Erstlingswerk auf Voodoo Rhythm Gipsy-Musik mit 20er-Jahre Jazz-Rock'n'Roll und Blues zu einer Melange, die zuletzt von den Dead Brothers erreicht wurde... was die PUSSYWARMERS einzigartig macht ist der 20er-Jahre Flair, den sie in die heutige Zeit retten. Songs wie ‚ASHES', ‚MY TIME HAS GONE' oder ‚DOUNATS' haben durchaus und durchweg Hitpotential! Songs die etwas skurriler daherkommen, wie BATEAU' oder das grandiose ‚AU REVOIR MADAME', welches das Trompetenspiel von Ex Dead Brothers Christoph Gantert fabulös zu Tage bringt, zaubert Dich in eine komische doch irgendwie heilige Stimmung.

The Pussywarmers provengono dalla Svizzera italiana,rimandano ad un grezzo e rozzo suono che prende dalla Dope n Glory Jazz area della metà degli anni 20.... o potrebbero benissimo essere l'orchestra del Titanic, nel suo primo e ultimo viaggio del 1912 o apparire come l'Orchesra del Freak Circus..e, con fiati, banjo e svariati strumenti acustiici, i The Pussywarmers sono un 'incredibile mix di tutto questo!
ASHES' ‚MY TIME HAS GONE' or ‚DOUNATS' sono definitivamente super pezzi con una grande OH DAMIT I REMEMBER THAT SHIT AND IT STUCK IN MY EAR THE WHOLE DAY" canzone come BATEAU' o la incredibile ‚AU REVOIR MADAME' possiede un carattere sporco e malato ed esalta il fantastico suono della tromba suonata dall'ex Dead Brother Christoph Gantert...tutto il disco è stato registrato al favoloso OUTSIDE INSIDE STUDIOS di Venezia-Italy, e la cover photo è opera di Travis Haight

Jag blir lika lycklig och förväntansfull varje gång det kommer ett brev med skivor från Voodoo Rhythm. När jag sedan öppnar kuvertet och möts av deras alltid lika snygga skivomslag stiger spänningen för att slutligen överskölja mig med välbehag när skivan skyndats ner i stereon. Ur högtalarna strömmar The Pusswarmers och deras musik som nästan är obeskrivbar. Enligt pressreleasen handlar det om italiensk tarantella, tango, vals, dixie, polka och psykadelisk punk. När jag höjer volymen känns det nästan som om jag hamnat i en film av Emir Kusturica och att Tom Waits dyker upp vilken sekund som helst för att dricka kaffe. Med andra ord så är det en underbar platta. Att större delen av plattan är inspelad analogt i ett rum med enbart två mikrofoner går nästan höra, och är nog en stor del i den märkliga och mystiska stämningen på plattan. Jazz trash and avant-garde cabaret punk quartet The Pussywarmers, who hail from Lugano, the "Little Italy" of Switzerland, have just released their second full-length studio album on Voodoo Rhythm Records, The Chronicles of... And after listening to the thirteen-song album in its entirety, it became quite clear why they refer to themselves as a little freak circus orchestra. With a sound that can be partly likened to the music that existed in the Weimer Republic jazz era, partly as the fast-paced and upbeat dancing songs used to combat the cases of tarantism rampant throughout southern Italy throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. But why stop there? There are so many other elements invloved, such as the waltz, tango, hot jazz, blues trash, oddball folk, polka-like dervishes of sound, and the experimental crossbreeding of it all. Without a doubt, The Pussywarmers write and play some of the craziest, wildest and strangest songs I have ever come across. But it works for them, and it works very well. "Me and Me Girl," the opening track on The Chronicles of..., is a weird, up-tempo, orchestral jazz composition with polyphonic choruses, and verses with bizarre vocals which sound as if the singer has been sucking helium. "I Had A Dream," probably my favorite song on the album, is a great bluesy composition with brilliant percussion, and horn parts that could have been on C.W. Stoneking's Jungle Blues album. "The Throne" is a tight, upbeat number, with fluid vocal delivery and busy trombone accompaniment. In the song "With Thee" both the instrumentation and vocals are a little slower and harder-hitting, almost like a marriage between broken blues and folk punk. "Broken Mirror" is a gypsy jazz piece with a carnival barker vocal delivery. And "Dov'è il mio cuor," the extremely brief closer, is all atmospheric church organ and echoey group vocals. Advertisement The Chonicles of... was recorded in Italy at Nene's (Movie Star Junkies, Vermillion Sands) Outside Inside Studios. And Most of the songs were recorded in one room with only two microphones, using a Tascam Analog Machine. Indeed, a very simple setup for such complex and involved music. While most of the songs are sung in English, there are a few songs in which other languages represented, like Italian, French and German. While I am able to appreciate the musical side to those songs, I cannot understand much of the lyrics due to my lazy American education. Makes me wish I had been more insistent upon learning foreign languages in my youth. Now, the core members of The Pussywarmers are Pozzo (vocals and guitar), Raoul (upright bass and vocals), Paime (banjo, singing saw, orchestron, harmonium, piano, backing vocals, etc), Dug (percussion), and Christph (trumpet and trombone). Guest musician Martin Schumacher sat in on clarinet for much of the album. And by listening to the end result of their efforts for this release, one can easily and confidently come to the conclusion that they are all of them very talented and visionary musicians and songwriters. Voodoo Rhythm Records officially released The Pussywarmers' The Chronicles of the... album to the world on April 29th of 2011 and on both CD and vinyl formats. Nur vom Coverartwork her und vom Namen der Band erschließt sich nicht, was sich auf dem Silberling verbirgt, den die aus dem Tessin stammende Formation an den Start bringt. Der Zusatztitel der Band, die im Infosheet als „EXOTICA OBSCURA FREAK SHOW VARIETEASE SEA CRUISE ORCHESTRA" betitelt wird, lässt dann schon eher erkennen, dass es sich um musikalisch eher ungewöhnliche Kost handeln dürfte. Im Player eingelegt erschallen Dixieland Klänge bei „me and the girl", damit ist das Spektrum allerdings noch lang nicht benannt. Von Tango über Jazz, von Polka bis Punk, diese Formation kennt keine Grenzen, sondern macht das, was ihr Spaß macht. Mal getragen traurig und nachdenklich, mal peppig, grade nach vorn wie bei „credo crepero". Eine solche musikalische Mischung ist schon was Besonderes. Wer sich darauf einlassen kann, der erlebt eine musikalische Zeitreise der anderen Art. Insgesamt sind 13 Songs auf dem Album vertreten, die alle auch einen leicht antiquierten Sound bieten, was nicht zuletzt an der analogen Aufnahme liegen mag.
GONZO CYRCUS (NL)
Uit het bijna uitsluitend Italiaanstalige, meest Zuidelijke kanton van Zwitserland genaamd Ticino (of Tessino) komt het freakkabinet dat zich The Pussywarmers noemt. Het is hun tweede album en een serieus stuk geflipter dan de voorganger, 'My Pussy Belongs To Daddy'. We vonden weinig aan dat debuut, menen we ons te herinneren, en GC#94 geeft ons daarin gelijk. Nu slaagt de band er wel in om ons te overtuigen, en hoe. Geef ze twee aftandse microfoons en wat basisapparatuur om alles op te nemen, geef ze drank, drugs en wegwerpeten en vertrokken zijn ze. Dertien songs, in het Engels, Frans of Italiaans gezongen, gekweeld, gespuwd. Nodig Christophe Gantert (The Dead Brothers, The Knickerbockers) en Martin Schumacher (Züri Ost, The Knickerbockers) uit met de intentie 'hoe meer onnozelaars hoe meer vreugd' en ga aan de slag met muziekgenres uit lang vervlogen tijden, en maak er een eigenzinnig psychedelisch klinkend soort variété mee. De reeks 'Incredibly Strange Music' zou blij zijn met een song van deze plaat, vol bluestrash, polka, dixieland, jazz, wals, tango, Duitse bierliederen, Brechtiaanse lyriek, verleidingsballades, zompige zombiedeuntjes en zigeuner- en kermisfratsen. We werden zowaar vrolijk van liedjes als 'Chanson D'Amour (Ce N'Est Pas Pour Moi)', '21 Marzo' en 'Send Me Some'. Of hoe een tweede plaat het idee over een band helemaal kan doen veranderen. Mama Rosin is een trio uit Genève, Zwitserland dat een rauwe versie van cajun brengt, terwijl de Londenaars van Hipbone Slim & The Kneetremblers (met Sir Bald Diddley in de rangen) eerder rauwe, bluesy garagepunk spelen. Beide trio's komen elkaar geregeld tegen bij optredens, en de bands besloten om gewoon eens samen een album in elkaar te steken. En dat is wel leuk eigenlijk, want de zes heren gooien hun voorkeuren allemaal op een hoop en destilleren er een ander soort songs van. Of hoe primitieve garagerock met een cajunfeel toch kan werken. Groot voordeel voor de songs is de eindeloze ervaring van Sir Bald Diddley, die de twaalf liedjes tot een hoger niveau tilt. De meeste songs zijn net niet zo goed als het werk van Hipbone Slim zelf, maar wel stukken beter dan het meeste werk van Mama Rosin. Het zijn dan ook de songs die Diddley aanlevert, die er als de beste uitkomen. We zijn net niet helemaal overtuigd van de plaat, maar gaan er wel van uit dat een concert van het sextet (of kwintet, de drummer wisselt voortdurend) heel erg de moeite kan zijn.
