| Deutsch: Neues von VOODOO RHYTHM aus der Schweiz. Da hat der Beatman aber wieder mal eine ordentliche Truppe ausgegraben und zwar eine waschechte Hobo Bluegrass Boogie Billy Band. Ob Sänger Zeno wirklich schon so harte Zeiten hinter sich hat, wie die Pressebeilage uns glauben machen will, vermag ich nicht zu beurteilen. Fakt ist aber, daß hier vier Mann hoch Musik gemacht wird, die traditionelles oldschool Countryfeeling und Bluegrass ausgesprochen glaubwürdig und doch modern nach vorne stellt. Irgendwo auch sehr Hank Williams like geht es textlich um die traurigen und schlechten Seiten im Leben- die üblichen/traditionellen Themen werden aufgegriffen und ansonsten ist die Message: DRINK YELL AND DANCE !!!! Sparsam instrumentiert mit Contrabass, Banjo, Fiddle und Gitarre (manchmal gibt es auch dezentes Schlagzeug und zweimal einen Gesangs-Gastauftritt von mysterious Isabelle Hell) wird mehrstimmig Stimmung gemacht und es stellt sich dieses desparate Gefühl ein, welches den Zuschauer in dem Film "O brother where are thou?" beschleicht, wenn die völlig verpeilete 3-erTruppe durch die Südstaaten Landschaft zieht. Die Jungs um Zeno sehen zwar nicht sehr schmutzig aus und stinken bestimmt auch nicht (was ja schon authentischer wäre), aber dafür haben sie Style, man selber bekommt schnell gute Laune und lässt die Probleme des Lebens rechts und links der Bahnlinie an sich vorüber ziehen. Gelungene Scheibe und live bestimmt eine Bank für gute Laune, schräge Tanzschritte und viel Durst. Produziert wurde von Olifr M. GUZ. (triggerfish) REVIEWS: SLEAZEGRINDER (Boston,USA) By the time you finish soaking in the band name, you've probably already got this one accurately pegged- Zeno and the boys are Swiss crazies plying trashy bluegrass, moonshine-ridden sickabilly, and primitive, lo-fi rock n' roll. Now, you may think that swamp-breath hillbilly shitkicker music can only come from the steamy climes of Dixieland USA, and yer probably right. However, the first line of this record is "Before I was sick, I was drunk" and the second line is "Before I was drunk, I was high", and that's close enough to an authentic redneck lament for rock and roll, brother. Fueled by an alternately sweet and sour pedal steel guitar and the cardboard thump-thump-thump of a stand-up bass, Mr. Tornado and his Boney Google Brothers (named not after the search engine, I reckon, but after a birth defect, or perhaps the tragic aftermath of a bar fight...or maybe they just got fucked-up eyes) tear into these surprisingly traditional sounding tunes like Aussie-tonk snarldogs the Beasts of Bourbon with a tipsy Slim Whitman up front. "I Love It" is a fiddle-fried hillbilly number that Elvis woulda done, if he didn't get all mixed up in that rock and roll nonsense. Likewise, "Liver Lover" is "Blue Suede Shoes", if said shoes were covered in piss and vomit. "Life's a Pissing Against the Wind" is all banjo pickin' and pseudo-yodel yelping, "Family Man" starts with "My daddy was a porno star" and sounds exactly like a song with that opening line should, their cover of "Highway Man" is brooding and reverential, and the dramatic death-ballad closer "Rebel" is pure Johnny Cash misery. I know, you probably wanted jokey, but not everything's a fuckin' joke, man. Zeno Tornado might be insane and wrong in the head – his mustache certainly suggests as much- but when it comes to country (or "Cunt-ry", as they the back cover calls it), he's as dead serious as a hound dog with his snout stuck in a beehive. I dunno if they have back porches in Switzerland or not, but they sure have big brass belt-buckles, and Zeno's is the biggest and brassiest of 'em all. Turns out, "Yeehaw" is "Yeehaw" in just about any 'ol language. GONZO CIRCUS (NL) Zero Tornado tapt uit andere vaatjes. "Dirty Dope Infected Blue Grass Hillbilly Hobo XXX Country Music" stelt het hoesje fier, en dat is ook wat we krijgen voorgeschoteld. Country, folk en hillbilly van iemand die de diepste dalen heeft gekend, er weer bovenop is geraakt en nu nummers maakt over drugs- en drankmisbruik, wilde seksspelletjes en geweld. Mandoline, fiddle, lapsteel, banjo, rechtopstaande bas en een kapot gefeeste stem, meer is er niet nodig voor deze, naar de normen van het label, behoorlijk traditioneel klinkende plaat. Sickabilly van de bovenste plank, waar de openingszin van de plaat meteen de toon zet voor dit ziekelijke dansfeestje: 'Before I was sick, I was drunk, before I was drunk I was high, before I was high I was stoned, before I was stoned I was twelve years old.' Johnny Cash met een Zwitserse twist voor diegenen die wild waren van Ween's '12 Golden Country Greats' of 'Must Have Been High' van The Supersuckers/. Rootsmuziek zoals ze hoort te klinken. INDIGO (DE) Sex, Drugs & Bluegrass: über die Genre-Beschreibung dieser Band braucht man sich keine Sorgen machen, die liefert sie selbst im Platten-Titel mit. Und da wird keinesfalls zuviel versprochen! Die Jungs um Sänger Zeno Tornado sorgen für gekonnt leichtfüßige, energiegeladene und atmosphärische Musik zwischen Country, Folk sowie Bluegrass und scheuen auch vor Abstecher zum Rockabilly nicht zurück. Schon allein wegen der gut gespielten Fiddle und Mandoline, dem gekonnt eingesetzten Banjo und dem swingenden Kontrabass macht das Ganze viel Spaß. Dazu kommen Zenos Texte, die einen unwillkürlich an Hank Williams oder den späten Johnny Cash erinnern. Muss man sich nun um die Lebenserwartung von Zeno Tornado ernsthaft Gedanken machen? Nun, wenn er so schnell lebt wie er es besingt, sollte man sich beeilen die Band noch mal live zu sehen. Ich habe das gemacht und kann berichten: Zeno Tornado versteht es aus einem schlechten Leben eine gute Party zu machen! Munster (SPAIN) Música Country sucia de un hombre que ha visto el lado oscuro, ha ido al Infierno y ha vuelto para contarlo. Historias del lado enfermo sobre abuso de drogas, sexo extraño y violencia... todo en un fantástico combo de country bluegrass. Bebe grita y baila! Si pones esto en una fiesta todo el mundo se meará en los pantalones y se volverá loco con la mezcla de Country, Bluegrass, Folk (sin flores). Compra este disco y en menos de dos años te despertarás enculado en Alcatraz! COUNTRY HOME (D) Mit der richtigen CD- und Titelwahl kann man, wenn man's denn geschickt anstellt, so ziemlich JEDEN von Countrymusik oder Artverwandtem überzeugen. Dieses Werk lässt sich, aufgrund verschwommener Elvis-Parallelen, in ausgewählten Tracks, auch zur Bekehrung von Muttis Nadelarbeits-Kursus, der wahrscheinlich sprachunkundig zu den harten Sex-, Crime&Drugs-Texten rumwackeln wird, heranziehen. Es macht aber auch keine schlechte Figur, wenn die, von oben bis unten in Jeans gepressten, Stoner-Rock- und Rockabilly-Freunde kurzfristig auf'n Bier nerven kommen. Allein das wirklich coole, Voodoo-Rhythm-typische Paperback-Cover könnte sie, wenigstens einige Minuten, beschäftigen oder sogar um ein paar Kostproben bitten lassen. Währendessen in musikalischen Bildern, mit dem typischen Bluegrass-Werkzeug (Mandoline, Fiddel, Steelguitar, Banjo), über die letzten Saufexzesse und „ Live's a pissing against the wind „, also das dreckige Leid harter, vergangener Tage berichtet wird, könnte man, sich angesprochen fühlend, auch noch selbstmitleidig die ein oder andere Dose Flüssig-Dope runterkippen oder aber feststellen, dass man nich' unbedingt gleich den Kopf auf die Bahnschienen legen muss und die Jungs doch auch ziemlich gut gelaunt daher kommen. Anspieltipp: Highway Man (Cash/Nelson/Jennings/Kristofferson) Daumen hoch für die kiffenden Tornados!! Der komplette Plattentitel heisst 'Dirty Dope Infected Blue Grass And Hillbilly Hobo XXX Country Music' und lässt unschwer erkennen, dass dieses Produkt dem Hause 'Voodoo Rhythm' entstammt. Alle Sympathie oder Antipathie gegenüber einheimischem Musikschaffen beiseite: das Debut von ZENO TORNADO und seinen drei BONEY GOOGLE BROTHERS ist, neben vielleicht der aktuellen CD von HANK WILLIAMS 3, eines der erfrischendsten Country-Alben der letzten Zeit. Produktions- und Gitarrenarbeit von OLIFR M. GUZ (DIE ZORROS) sowie die beiden Gesangsduos mit der göttlichen ISABELLE HELL tun das ihre dazu. Zeno, das Problem-Kind aus Bern, das in den 80ern in der HC Band B.U.R.P. lärmte, macht jetzt mit seinen Boney Google Brothers Blue Grass, Country und Rock'n'Roll. "Im Alter beginnt man sich für Country-Musik zu interessieren". Dies stammt aus einem Aeronauten Song von Olifr M. Guz und Guz ist auch der Produzent dieser Platte. Aber Zeno & Co sind keine 0815 Country- Truppe, man wird sie vergebens auf dem Albisgüetli suchen. Jeder Song tönt wieder anders und rockt auf seine eigene kaputte Weise. Die schlüpfrigen Texte und die verschiedensten Instrumente (Lap Steel Guitar, Banjo, Fiddle) machen diese Platte zu einem selten dagewesenen Hörerlebnis. Wenn man genügend Schnaps getrunken hat, diese Scheibe einwirft, und die Augen schliesst, sieht man sich schon singend auf einer Prachts-Stute den Üetliberg hinaufreiten. Gebt's euch dreckig und kauft diese Platte. Women cry for it - Men will die for it. i94 bar (AUS) Switzerland has hardly ever been known as a mecca for country music, especially the distinctly traditional 'old timey' American country music delivered by Zeno Tornado and The Boney Google Brothers. Vocalist-guitarist Zeno Tornado is backed up by The Boney Google Brothers: Satch Google (banjo, mandolin, lap steel), Manic Google (fiddle) and Magot Google (stand-up bass), as well guests Swan Lee (drums) and Isabelle Hell (vocals). The CD opens with the up tempo 'High' a tale of marijuana use (and abuse) from an early age, and features a stand-up bass solo from Magot Google."City Lights" is another early highlight with ear-catching mandolin from Satch Google, followed by some fine fiddle work from Manic Google. "Blah Blah Baby" features Zeno Tornado in a duet with Isabelle Hell as Zeno bemoans a nagging, tiresome partner whom turns him off marital sex. "Liver Lover" continues in an up-tempo vein as Zeno Tornado discusses his abuse of alcohol and its effect on his liver, as the band pay a musical tribute in part to the Carl Perkins-penned classic "Blue Suede Shoes". The only non-original tune on the CDLP is 'Highwayman' previously recorded by The Highwaymen featuring Johnny Cash (RIP), Waylon Jennings (RIP), Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson and written by Jimmy Webb (writer of Glen Campbell classics "Wichita Lineman" and "By the Time I Het to Phoenix"). It features the guest guitarist (and producer) Olifer M. Guz, with the standard Zeno Tornado hillbilly sound - a far cry from the version by The Highwaymen. "Live's a Pissing Against the Wind" has to be the best song title of 2003, as Zeno tells us about life becoming a massive pain up the behind, in the band's usual rollicking, up-tempo fashion. "Family Man" must have the best first line in any song of 2003, as Zeno tells us this time of his dad, and his career as an adult movie star. "Vanbang" appears to be taken from a radio appearance, with its faux guest radio DJ introduction for Zeno and the band, as he is yet again joined by Isabelle Hell as Zeno sings about down-and-dirty sex activities. "Rebel" closes the album, with Zeno taking a moment to deliver a song on his own. For fans of The Supersuckers "Must have been High / Live", Ween's "12 Golden Country Greats" and Earl Lee Grace's (the side project of legendary singer of The Dwarve's Blag Dahlia) "Blackgrass", "Dirty Dope Infected Blue Grass Hillbilly Hobo XXX Country Music", fits right in with its sex, violence, drinking and drug abuse and is the most killer "roots" music release of 2003. O.X (D) Ein weiteres schönes Beispiel für die musikalische Unberechenbarkeit des Voodoo Rhythm-Labels. Wie der Titel schon andeutet, fabrizieren ZENO TORNADO AND THE BONEY GOOGLE BROTHERS eine wilde Mischung aus Folk, Bluesgrass und Country, das Bemerkenswerteste dabei ist, dass die Band nicht etwa aus dem tiefsten Texas kommt, sondern aus Bern. Eigentlich sollte einen bei Voodoo Rhythm ja nichts mehr wundern, aber wie so oft klingt die Aufnahme wirklich nicht nach der Jetztzeit und vor allem nicht so, als wenn irgendwelche Schweizer Polterabend-Entertainer so was nachspielen würde. Authentizität, Baby! Ja, das haben sie, die Schweizer, und dabei kann man Voodoo Rhythm wirklich nie den Vorwurf machen, die Welt mit öden Retro-Fürzen zu belästigen, denn dafür macht auch diese Platte einfach zuviel Spaß, die sich mit der nötigen Respektlosigkeit amerikanische Rootsmusik aneignet. After one glance at the album's title and cover art (which bears the likes of a syringe, smoking gun, naked woman, and many a scattered pill), one should realize that its opening words are perfectly par for the course. Here, Zeno and the Boney Google Brothers set down the cornbread long enough to tap out 14 smoking bluegrass anthems about almost every vice imaginable. Each aspect of this dirty square dance is, however, completely solid, the musicianship is flawless, and the spirit is irrefutably fun.
